Joe Gillis, een filmschrijver die bankroet is, verstopt zich voor zijn schuldeisers in de garage van een landhuis dat er verlaten uit ziet. Het huis blijkt echter de woning te zijn van Norma Desmond, een gepensioneerde filmster. Joe trekt bij haar in, en probeert tegelijkertijd Norma's hopeloze "comeback"-screenplay te herschrijven. Weken gaan er voorbij, en Joe raakt steeds meer afgezonderd van de buitenwereld.
