Dave Robbins Big Band Happy Faces 2025


Big band leader and trombonist Dave Robbins puts together a big band that records and album reminiscent of a vintage radio broadcast, complete with intro and outro themes. The songs themselves have a swinging Horace Silver feel to them, , such as a hip “Asiatic Raes” featuring Don Clark/tp and Fraser MacPherson/ts and the hard hitting “Africa Lights” in which the leader gets some solo space. Bassist Paul Ruhland delivers a nifty line  for trumpeter Bobby Hales on “Canto de Oriole” and pianist Chris Gage is gorgeous on a wondrous read of “Spring Is Here”.
